OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this assignment was to investigate different types of artificial reefs. As research progressed, I found that artificial reefs can be split into two main categories of functions: 1) to harbor aquatic life, and 2) to break waves. The focus of this research is towards artificial reefs that break waves. I analyzed two different sites where wave breaking artificial reefs have been placed or are planning to be placed. At both of these sites, I wanted to determine whether or not these artificial reefs were successful in breaking waves sooner, thus protecting the beaches on the shores behind them.
