To
conclude, the computed seiches period by FEMSEICHE are generally
satisfactory (error % from 0.31% to 9.71%). Compare to Merian's
formula, FEMSEICHE can give more accurate results in estimating
seiches period.
The error can be caused by the
following reasons:
¡@ |
(1) |
Insufficient data points
The number of nodes used in modeling Lake Mendota were not enough
to generate a model that has a geometry close to the real
situation
¡@ |
¡@ |
(2) |
Invalid assumption that Lake Mendota
is a closed basin
The boundary condition used FEMSEICHE says that there is no flow
across the boundaries of lake, but there is actually flow coming
from the Yahara River
¡@ |
¡@ |
(3) |
Coriolis effects
Although the Rossby radius of deformation is larger than the width
of Lake Mendota, but the coriolis force still affects the Lake and
thus contribute to the error
¡@ |
The study can be improved by:
¡@ |
(1) |
Adding additional nodes to refine
the model of Lake Mendota
¡@ |
¡@ |
(2) |
Obtaining field data of longer
duration
Data over a longer time period can help to verify the assumption
we made (the first mode was missing in the field data we used in
this study) and give more accurate values of seiches period. |
